Reflecting on AAPI Heritage Month 2023

With Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month coming to a close, I wanted to reflect on the past month and what AAPI heritage means to me.

As the daughter of Korean immigrants, this month is especially important to me, and I take great pride in my identity as an Asian-American.

In 2021, I became the first Korean-American woman elected to the House of Delegates, and while I may be the first, I will most certainly not be the last.

It’s more important than ever that our AAPI community is heard, visible, and has a seat at the table. Through my work on the Virginia Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus, I’m fighting every day to enact policy to uplift and protect our state’s growing AAPI community.

As we close out this AAPI Heritage Month, I hope you’ll join me in celebrating the contributions, histories, and cultures of our diverse AAPI communities throughout our state and our country. And let’s honor these communities by standing together against AAPI discrimination in all its forms not just during the month of May, but every month of the year. Together, we can build a Commonwealth that is inclusive and welcoming for all.
